2 posts are being filled. The preferred locations are Teagasc, Kildalton College Piltown, Co Kilkenny and Teagasc, Animal & Grassland Research & Innovation
Centre, Grange, Dunsany, Co Meath (An alternative Teagasc location may be considered solely at the discretion of the Head of Department – Knowledge Transfer, Drystock).

Reporting To:

Head of Department – Knowledge Transfer, Drystock and/or other nominated manager as maybe identified from time to time.


Agricultural Development Officer Grade 1, with a starting salary of €33,056 per annum. The current salary scale is €33,056 to €64,337.

New entrants to the public sector will commence on the first point of the scale. Remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government Policy.


Teagasc has received three years industry funding to operate a second phase of the Teagasc - Green Acres Calf to Beef Programme. The objective of this
programme is to advise and demonstrate best practice at farm level on the profitable rearing, growing and finishing of purchased dairy bred calves through to
beef on a whole farm basis and to provide technical support and targeted training to the technical staff of the contributing partners to the programme.

Basic Function:

To actively support the implementation of the second phase of the Teagasc - Green Acres Calf to Beef Programme; to improve the profitability of a number of
participating demonstration farms through more effective technology transfer and monitoring; and to disseminate the information coming from these farms through
specialised calf to beef group meetings, media articles, social media platforms, technical notes, fact sheets, open days, training and all other methods of knowledge transfer.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare an annual work schedule and liaise with the local Business & Technology Advisor to ensure the objectives of the Teagasc Green Acres Calf to Beef Programme are met on participating farms.
  • Develop in conjunction with research, specialist and advisory colleagues an appropriate 3-4 year plan for the Teagasc Green Acres farms and work to achieve the targets set.
  • Assist and advise the demonstration farms in the areas of financial planning, grassland management/agronomy, calf rearing, animal nutrition and animal health.
  • Collect and collate technical and financial performance data from the participating Teagasc Green Acres farms.
  • Provide regular and timely farm visits to the Teagasc Green Acres farms, provide technical advice on an
    ongoing basis and ensure that they are implementing the agreed changes in their farm plan.
  • Ensure that the Teagasc Green Acres Farm participants complete the Teagasc eProfit Monitor annually.
  • Ensure the Teagasc Green Acres Farm participants complete weekly grass measurements on their farm and that they enter this data into PastureBase Ireland.
  • Disseminate through a number of channels the physical and financial performance of the demonstration farms including writing articles for the national press and Teagasc publications, putting information on the Teagasc public website and other social media platforms and through occasional publications including conference papers.
  • Assist in the production of a number of videos each year on topics of interest to farmers who are operating a calf to beef enterprise.
  • Conduct a number of farmer group meetings each year on each participating demonstration farm on relevant topics relating to the operation of a calf to beef enterprise.
  • Provide information on the farms at Teagasc in-service training of advisors and teachers and provide regular updates and training to technical staff of companies that are providing external funding for the programme.
  • Organise and run a number of national calf to beef farm events on each of the demonstration farms over the three years of the programme.
  • Form part of a steering committee that will oversee the running of the programme including the agreed work activities on each demonstration farm and different outputs that are expected from the programme.
  • Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of oneself, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Teagasc Safety Statement.

  • Assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and Action Plan.
  • Actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.
  • Carry out such other duties and assignments as delegated by the Programme Manager or Teagasc management.

Person Specification

Note: The ‘essential’ qualifications, knowledge, skills and behavioural competencies outlined above are ‘must-have’ which will be used in the selection process.



  • Applicants must hold a relevant QQI Level 8 Degree in Agricultural Science or equivalent


  • Relevant work experience in cattle advisory service.
  • Relevant Post Grad qualification.



  • Experience in farm planning and advisory work required including technology transfer skills.
  • Good ICT skills.
  • Writing skills.
  • Financial and analytical skills.
  • Grassland management skills.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Solid understanding and experience of cattle farming and the key factors influencing profitability on Irish beef farms.


  • Experience in calf rearing
