Gurteen College is recruiting - we are looking for additional members of our teaching team. Contract options are available for full-time and part-time staff.

Duration

Permanent role and a 12 month maternity Cover role are available - A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies will be filled: such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.

Background

The post is based at Gurteen College, a vibrant Agricultural College located in Ballingarry, Roscrea Co. Tipperary. The college delivers high quality training and education to Full time and Part time students, operating from a large residential campus and running a 1000-acre commercial farm which includes woodlands, bog, and lough. Basic function

The successful candidates may be teaching modules across a variety of courses including level 8 Degree in Agricultural Science & Sustainability, full time Level 5 and Level 6 Agriculture and adult green cert courses. You will be expected to teach and assess a range of subjects.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Range of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To adopt the most effective and progressive teaching, instruction and ICT methodologies.
  • Preparation and delivery of classes/lectures for a variety of relevant programme areas.
  • Delivery of practical skills instruction and the assessment of these skills.
  • Act as a course tutor to group/s of students.
  • Preparation and delivery of assessments in accordance with Quality & Qualifications Ireland (QQI) guidelines.
  • Correcting, recording, verifying and informing students of their progress in the assessment system.
  • Implementing quality assurance including internal verification.
  • Provision of tutorials/mentoring to students on class work and practicals related to their chosen course.
  • Visiting of schools and career open days in order to market courses and give guidance on likely job opportunities for school leavers and mature students.
  • Provision of material for events, open days, in-service training and educational exhibits.
  • To participate in the Whole College Evaluation process as required.
  • To actively engage in the implementation of access, disability and young learner protection policies.
  • To provide support to other Gurteen activities as and when required.
  • Liaison with relevant internal and external stakeholders.
  • To assist management and administrative staff in achieving good governance and risk management through co-operation and adherence to administrative procedures and practices.
  • To assist Gurteen in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service charter and action plan through adherence to best practice protocols.
  • To assist with managing the health, safety and welfare of students.
  • To maintain responsibility for own development and updating through active participation in staff development and appraisal procedures.
  • To develop & deliver an agreed business plan as part of a college team.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Qualifications

At the time of application, candidates must have:

A Level 8 in Agriculture or related discipline 

      Postgraduate qualification in Agriculture or teaching methodologies would be of advantage

      Teamwork and leadership abilities

      Quality and customer service focus

      Having experience in teaching/ lecturing would be a distinct advantage

 

Knowledge

      Knowledge of the main Irish Agricultural sector enterprises

      Applicants must be up to date on current teaching methodologies to deliver knowledge to students

      Understanding of the role of Agriculture in Ireland

 

      QQI Quality assurance procedures

      Teagasc Education system

      Farm Business Planning desirable- e- Profit monitor and National Farm Survey results

      Familiar with Agri- systems e.g., ICBF (Irish Cattle Breeding Federation), Pasture Base, Ag Food

Behavioural Competencies

      Ability to work as part of a team working across several different courses.

      Has the ability to problem solve and demonstrates a high level of attention to detail.

      Demonstrates positive approach to new challenges and dissemination of new tasks.

Other

      The successful candidate will be required to have their own transport to efficiently carry out the duties of the role. Travel and subsistence expenses will be payable at approved public service rates.

      Candidates must satisfy and continue to satisfy during employment with Teagasc, legal requirements to drive a car unaccompanied on Irish public roads.
